3D Artistic Abilities

Class 1

Project Description:

For our first class, students created their own 3D pieces depicting their favorite foods using various materials: tissue paper, cardboard, construction paper, etc. We began by defining what 3D art means- creating an art piece that has width, height and depth. Then we had a brief discussion about our favorite foods which led to a discussion about materials and how materials can be folded, crumpled, cut, glued and shaped to form our desired food.  Each teacher showed example pieces along with sketches to show the planning and ideation to demonstrate various foods and how they were created. Students sketched their food and explored with materials to make 3D pieces. This was a fun project to get to know students on the first day through their favorite foods.

Essential Understanding

The essential understanding for this project is for students to explore forming and shaping 3D objects with various materials. Problem solving from ideation to creation is also an essential understanding in this project. These skills will be the base to build on for following projects.

Intended Outcomes

  • Students will be able to sketch ideas for their project and explain them.

  • Students will be able to choose materials that best fir their ideas.

  • Students will be able to make food that tells us something about themselves.

  • Students will be able to talk about their material choice and how they were used.

Skills

The skills the students are working towards are:

  • Planning out project

  • Problem solving from ideation to creation

  • Forming and shaping 3D objects with various materials

  • Engage in discussion of ideas and of final project

  • Expression of self through creation

What worked well for this art experience? Why?

Overall, I think the whole class went well. I felt like a lot of the students were engaged and enjoying what they were creating. We were able have all the students excited about what they were about to make. And they were able to work on the sketching process. I worked with Student #9  specially with the sketches, and I had her hold a pencil as I moved the paper. Even though it wasn’t much, she was able to create a taco and a cupcake I think these parts were successful because, we showed them some ideas about our sketches, and our pieces that we made. And a lot of students came up with a different variety of things. Which was something I was worried about.  I was worried that a lot of the pieces would look like the sample that the teachers made. The class discussion after we created our pieces, I think was successful, a lot of the students talked about their piece. And they were able to connect the food that they created to something about their culture or personality. We as the teachers really tried to come up with different questions that would get them to start talking about certain things, like what materials they used, texture...etc. And I believe that is what made our class discussion so successful. â€‹

What didn’t work well for this art experience? Why?

There were several things that did not work well. The first one was, there was a lot of one on one assisting. I personally felt very attached to one of the students, like I couldn’t go and look at any of the other students because this student needed so much help. I also could tell that a lot of us were doing a lot of the work for the students, and I think that is because, at least for me, we didn’t know what was okay or not okay to do. Like should I let them use X’o knives, or hot glue guns. And for the student that I was working with, she did not have much movement in her hands and so I didn’t know what to do or how to accommodate with a glue gun. I also felt like I was giving too many suggestions, and not letting the student have free reign. I am not sure if the other teachers felt this way, but for me I know I was guilty of it. Another thing is, was the paints. Personally, I did not know that tempera and acrylic paints do not mix. I have never taken painting, and do not know a lot about paints. Another thing that I thought did not work was having the one table of materials; I think it would just have been better to have some materials at each table. I felt like it was a little overwhelming for some students. Cleanup was another thing, it mostly ended up, being the teachers just cleaning. And I think we need to be more specific on who is cleaning what. A lot of the students just wanted to go look at the pieces, and it was hard to get them all to come back and clean up before we had a discussion.

What would you do differently? Why?

I would probably do the same assignment because I think the idea was successful. But, I would maybe not have hot glue guns, and maybe have just tape and regular glue. That way we wouldn’t have so much worry about the students burning themselves. Another thing is, I would give certain people certain tasks on what to clean. That way they would feel like they had a purpose. I also would try and change my influence on the students, for me personally, I was so worried about their safety that I did not give them much free reign. And now looking back on it, I really regret that. I felt like a helicopter parent, and that is complete opposite of what I want to be in future teacher experiences. I think I need to relax a little bit more, and not worry about the end product. Sadly, I got so caught up in that, to the point where I felt like I couldn’t let the students flourish. I hated it. Another thing I would do differently, is make sure that each teacher has a certain part that they are talking about during the lesson. I felt like some of us talked more than others, and I think to make it more equal that we should have written out who will start what. I think something we as the teachers need to work on is, creating projects that gives the students more individuality. Letting the students be able to explore, and not have use helping them do certain techniques.  Unfortunately, I did not see much of that. Which again, I defiantly was part of that. I just did not know how much I could let the student do without them hurting themselves.
