Standard 1

Quality Standard 1

Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach.

The elementary teacher is an expert in literacy and mathematics and is knowledgeable in all other content that s/ he teachers (e.g., science, social studies, arts, physical education, or world languages). The secondary teacher has knowledge of literacy and mathematics and is an expert in his or her content endorsement area(s).

This standard I believe that I am Accomplished because of the qualifications that I believe that I meet. At Colorado State University, the Art Education program incorporates many art studio classes, and education experiences. With this unique experience, and the amount of studio classes that are required I graduated in a BFA in Art Education compared to other universities where you only receive a BA in art education.  Because of this experience, I am comfortable teaching painting, drawing, metal smiting, photography, sculpture, pottery, fibers, and drawing. After you take your foundations, you take your concentration studios, I had a concentration in pottery and fibers, so I was fortunate enough to take several upper level classes in pottery and in fibers content classes.  I have grown a lot as teacher during my time at Cambridge and Alamo Heights because of the content that I had to teach. I learned a lot more about ceramics as a teacher rather than a student because I am not just thinking about myself when loading the kiln, I am thinking my students and all of their work. I am constantly thinking about how I would learn this content as a learner rather than a teacher, and that gives me insight on how I will teach my students as a a teacher. My professional goals are to become confident in all art mediums, I will challenge myself to teach mediums that I am not a comfortable in and grow as a learning but also a teacher. I want to learn as much as I can from my students to grow a teacher and make the content that they are learning understandable so they can be successful.

Overall Reflection

Element A: Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, their District’s organized plan of instruction, and the individual needs of their students.

Rationale

The artifact that is presented above, is a snap shot of my lesson plan from my mixed media lesson that was created for the ceramics classes at Alamo Heights High School. Ever lesson plan that I create, I have my objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Colorado Visual Arts Standards. When I am creating my lessons, I always focus on the standards and then that usually shapes the outcomes and learning targets of my lessons. I also uses this standards to use a success criteria when creating rubrics and daily goals.

Element B: Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematical practices.

Rationale

These are artifacts of how I incorporated literacy and other content area into my lessons. At Cambridge Elementary, in the 1st grade class, I taught weaving. Our lesson was centered around measuring, and literacy. We create a goat in a rug, based on the book The Goat In The Rug by Geraldine. I loved incorporating these type of stories into my lesson, and seeing the beauty of read aloud in a classroom setting. I think because of Covid, students have missed that experience of reading in a community type setting. So, it was  refreshing experience to be part of it. Students were guided to create a paper weaving based on the story that we read, and focusing on measuring, patterns, layering, and cutting techniques.

Element C: Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.

Rationale

This is an example of some of my slides that I created for my mixed media lesson for ceramics at Alamo Height High School. This lesson is focused around creating sculpture with clay and other found materials like yarn, buttons, wire, or dried flowers. This project was presented to students in a way that they could see other ways that artist create art work that is considered ceramics. I focused on technique, weaving techniques and photo transferring onto ceramic pieces.
