Journal #3 February 22 2021

The week of February 15 2021, Texas got hit with a nasty winter storm that we were not prepared for. People were out of power and water for the whole week, roads were shut down, and school was canceled. It was defiantly something new for me, coming from Colorado, and then seeing how Texas wasn’t prepared for the winter storm. I lost power in my home for about 36 hours, and I had to boil my water to drink for a week. It was sad to miss a week of school, I missed my students and I was worried for them during that time. The school handed out water and warm meals to teachers and students who didn’t have food or the means to cook. It was amazing to see how a community of a school came together to help each other during a time of crisis.

I have worked really hard on building relationships with students, and classroom management. Last week, we started the second part of our weaving unit, 5thgraders are creating weaving using cardboard looms. I am teaching 1st-5thgrade solely, and I am constantly trying to learn and grow through that time. I have seen myself grow as a teacher, and learn more about myself. I love being able to teach something that I am passionate about, and it is exciting to see students get excited about weaving. I love seeing how they are creating a weaving and making it personal to them. I have been showing videos during the week of fiber artist, like Nick Cave, Navajo weavers, and other communities that weaving is a large part of their culture. I think it is important to see how a lot of cultures and communities bring weaving into their culture and art.

I have been working on clean up routines for the students, and finding ways that we can making clean up simple and successful. I have found ways to give students different jobs, and help with sanitizing barrowed materials. I will say it is hard when students don’t bring their materials, because that means more clean up for me, and a lot of times it really hard to find time for that, and then I end up running out of materials for the next class. So finding ways to remind students how important it is to bring your own materials to art class.

This is my last two weeks here at Cambridge Elementary, it has gone by so fast already. I am going to miss my students that I have built relationships with. I am excited about my next placement that I will be working at, and building relationships with those students.

Art work for this journal, I created some simple line drawings that have added accents of water color. I love creating with water color, I feel like it something that be so complex but yet so simple. I created these pieces for my house, I want to create something that would accent my domestic space, and also bring it my love for plants and leaves. I am trying to create more work for myself, rather than for other people. I want to start a journal where I sketch what I did that day, I think it will be nice break and give me a way to still create everyday.
