Lesson 2: Weaving

Lesson 2: The Goat In the Rug (Weaving Unit)

Grade: 1st Grade

Lesson and Relevance

Students will create a paper weaving as a part of our weaving/fibers unit. They will create a paper weaving to create a rug, then they will cut out a goat  using paper to collage onto the rug. Students will learn about the process of weaving and the techniques of the warp and the weft.

Essential Understanding

Students will learn the concepts of warp and weft which is the foundations of weaving by reading the Book the Goat in the Rug. They will use this to create a paper weaving and then college their weaving with a goat that they cut out of paper.

Colorado Visual Art Standards

Standards: (All lessons should address all standards.)

1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend

2.Envision and Critique toReflect

3. Invent and Discover to Create

4. Relate and Connect to Transfer

Objectives and Learning Targets

  • Students will cut their loom. By follow the teacher direction to create their loom for weaving. ( Visual Art Standard #1 Observe and Learn to Comprehend. GLE: Comprehend and learn the process of creating a loom out of paper. Art Learning: Comprehend and Process)

  • With their weft Paper, they will cut strips to create their weft.(Visual Art Standard #1 Observe and Learn to Comprehend. GLE: Using Measuring and Cutting techniques to make weft. Art Learning: Weft and Measure.)

  • Combining weft and loom to create their weaving. (Visual Art Standard #4 Relate and Connect to Transfer. GLE: Using Over under technique to create the weaving. Art Learning: weft and Loom.)

  • After weaving, Students will college a goat and floral design onto their rug.(Visual Art Standard #3 Invent and Discover to Create. GLE: Collaging paper onto the weaving. Art Learning: College and color.)

  • Students will share, one thing that they like about their rugs. (Visual Art Standard #2 Envision and Critique to Reflect. GLE: Reflect their process and learning. Art Learning: Reflect and Share.)

Differentiation:(Multiple means for students to access content and multiple modes for student to express understanding.)

Access (Resources and/or Process)

Having student needing some one on one time to cut out their loom and go over scissor basic

Expression (Products and/or Performance)

Students will ask for some extra help and will have some one on one work to create their loom

Extensions for depth and complexity:

Access (Resources and/or Process)

Students will cut out their own warp and weft and won’t needed guided attention

Expression (Products and/or Performance)

Students take off in their own route and create their looms on their own

Action to motivate/Inquiry Questions:

Have you ever heard of weaving? Or Maybe hand sewn before? Can you explain the movement that you did? It’s a Up and Down/ over under movement right? Our clothes made on a loom like the video we watched? Or Maybe a rug in the house similar to the book?

Ideation/Inquiry:

What are some things that we can weave on? Cardboard? A hula-hoop? A Chair?

Having students do the movement like “riding the wave” “over and under”

Student Reflective Activity

On the last day giving student the choice to pair share with their table partners and share about their work. And what pattern, and line work that they created. And one thing that is their favorite about the piece.

Teacher Reflection

Overall, I think the project went well. Some students had some issues with the technique of over and under. But overall, it was successful and I think the students were able to put their own personal touches. I think have less teacher direction is key, because the students can only focus for so many minutes. So reducing teacher direct time, and having students just work and create I think will be good for them in the future.
