3D Artistic Abilities

Class 5

Project Description

We as a class will be exploring Giacometti Sculptures to create full body self portraits in sculpture form. We’ve been scaffolding on forming and shaping animals, masks, hot air balloons, etc, now we will explore forming and shaping the human form as well as learning about a historical artist that did not sculpt in naturalistic style.

Essential Understandings

The essential understandings for this project are for students to implement the problem-solving skills that they have built throughout previous lessons to form and shape using pipe cleaners and aluminum foil. This facilitates the creating of form that represents movement and expression.

Intended Outcomes

  • Students will be able to sketch their ideas

  • Students will be able to explain how they intend to create their figures

  • Students will continue working on forming and shaping techniques

  • Students will be able to reflect on themselves through a full body self portrait

Skills

  • Learn how different materials can be used to make human forms

  • Creating dynamic poses

  • Using foil in a was that is not traditional

  • Continue to use building techniques previously learned in class

  • Learn about an artist who had an impact on the art world.

Journal Entry

What worked well for this art experience? Why?

I think what worked well was, we were able to get all the projects that we had planned done with the amount of time that we had. We needed to have critique about our hot air balloons, we need to paint their masks, and we needed to do the Giacometti sculptures. We were worried it was going to be too much for the students, but I think it is good to over plan than to not have enough things to do. We were able to keep the students on track, and get all the projects done. And at the end of class, we even had time to talk about why we painted the masks and the sculptures. And a lot of the students got the main ideas of the masks. Which was awesome. One of the students, did more research on the idea of masquerade balls and that is what she based her mask on. Which was exactly what we were talking about as a concept. So, it was nice to hear that the student actually understood the point of the project.

What didn’t work well for this art experience? Why?

I things that needed to be improve on is, I think tonight we as teachers were not on the same page on what we were going to talk about or what to do first. And I think we needed to work on that. We figured it out for the class and I think it worked well, but I think for it to be successful we should have had a longer discussion. Because sometimes we get to the studio and some people did show up or one student was here for the last class so we have to improvise what the student can do so they are not behind. And I think if all the teachers were prepared and knew what was going on it would run a bit smoother and be more successful.

What would you do differently?  Why?

Something I would do different is, I would not do the Giacometti sculptures. It was kind of a fail honestly, and a lot of the student did not get the point of it. Which again, was us as teachers because we did not explain it well enough. Also, a lot of the students were just getting frustrated with the whole project and couldn’t do the certain techniques. And that it got frustration for the teacher because the student was stressed. And I hate when the student gets frustrated because it just makes me sad, and it means I didn’t explain something well enough or I am not doing what I should be doing as a teacher.
