Instructional Management

Classroom Management Key Philosophy: Building respectful relationships with students and having clear expectations for the art classroom. Setting routine and structure will help students be the most successful.

When thinking about my management plan, I tend to think back to the studio habits that I want to foster into my classroom. When grading I looking at the whole students not just their skills in that one medium. When thinking about classroom management I think it is important to focus how the students can be the most successful. Typically students will thrive on routine and structure, and when there are clear expectations they will be the most successful. My goal is when my students walk into the classroom they know exactly what is expected of them especially with studio practice.

I think it is important to focus on the student as a whole, and understanding what are ways that you can set expectations so that they will be successful in the end. Understanding our students and building those relationships is also important when thinking about classroom management. Students will also understand that studio habits are a policy and expectation when in the classroom. Students want your trust and respect, and you as a teacher want the same. Those ideas are placed with in the beginning of the year, to set up a classroom culture. Below is is a bullet form lay out of key classroom management that I will foster in my practice.

Setting clear expectation and rules of what is expected when in the art classroom

  • Being direct and stern in the beginning so students know that this classroom is about respect and integrity.

  • Having students sign a document that has the expectations of the classroom

  • Having a set up and clean up schedule

    • Giving students weekly jobs so they know what is expected of them that week

Seating Assignments

  • This is important to know names and also building those relationships.

  • Also helps with classroom management, and helps students meet other students in their classroom

Studio Habits

  • Students engage in reflections and encouraging other students in their craft.

  • Giving positive feedback to other students and participating in the classroom

Overall, I have noticed that being prepared as a teacher plays an important role when having good classroom management. I have noticed this first hand when I teaching, especially when I am trying to set up classroom clean up, it is good to have the jobs for the students planned out beforehand. Of course somethings, you really just can’t prepare for, and a lot of times you have to adapt. But, it is important especially when you are teaching elementary school to have everything planned out and plan for some behavior issues that might occur.
