Instruction and Assessment Statement

As an Artist and Educator, I have the privilege of bring my two passion together as an art educator. Through these passions, I find it important to use art as way to help students grow as an artist but also in other areas to make them successful for the future. Since most students might not ever take an art class ever again, I know that through my class my students will grow in creative thinking and problem solving that will help them in their future careers. In my classroom, I will be setting an example of a choice - based classroom with an emphasis on problem solving, reflection, and talking about students art. Giving students the choice based style learning gives students the path to create art work that they are passionate about.

Pre- Instruction

Before I start my planning of my lessons I think of a couple things

  1. How will my students bring a personal connection to this project

  2. How will they use these skills that they are learning in this unit beyond the class room

  3. What are ways that I can help my students be more successful

I think about these criteria before I start my lesson planning because these are things that I want to bring into every lesson that I am creating. I want my students to be exciting about what they are creating, and it makes them want to be pushed further as a student and a artist. I also want to find ways that they can use the skills that they are learning in my classroom go beyond the classroom into their future careers and schooling. And lastly, I want to find ways that I can make sure my students are set up for success. I believe it is important to set up students in the classroom to be successful and that start at the planning process.

Formative studio habits

Assessing Students by adapting the Studio Habits of the Mind as a formative assessment is important. Assessing the studio habits of the child rather than focusing on assessing the one skill that is being taught helps the student grow overall as a student. This assessment also looks at the progress of the student as a whole rather than grading the student based on project by project. I like to use this technique in a way of a digital sketchbook, due to COVID-19, digital sketchbooks have been a great resource to see the progress of the students creativity process. I can assess the student’s problem solving, reflections, artist statements, and sketches. I also like to use this process as a form of an artist statement, which has the student mainly reflect on the project and unit as a whole, and focus on what they and what they need to be improve on.

Summative assessment

Gallery walks is a summative assessment that I use as a way for students to reflect on their artwork to other student and then also receive feedback about their work. It is a process where the student presents their work, and I have them receive feedback first before the artist talks about their work. After the students give feedback to the artist, then the artist can reflect on their work. It gives them a way for them to receive positive feedback, and also reflect on the feedback to grow as an artist. It is important to have students talk about their art to others because it will have them gain confidence as a student and artist.

Step by Step

I would first think about the project and make sure that it fits the criteria that I am trying to have my student achieve. That would be looking at the project and making sure that my students have some sort of personal connection to the project, what skills will they be taking from it. And then what are the ways I can make the students more successful. Then I would assess the student in a Student Habits Criteria and looking at the students progress through out the whole project not just based on their skills on the medium. Then in the end I would have my summative assessment where my students would have a gallery walk where they can use that time to reflect on their work and also receive feedback from their peers. Overall, I want the student to enjoy what they are learning and find ways that my students can be the most successful.
