Lesson 1: Pattern&line Landscapes

Lesson and Relevance

Students will be creating a landscape scene using line and pattern to fill in the space. They will only be able to use different pattern and line techniques to create their scene. They will use line, pattern, value and shape to create their landscapes. In the end their art work will be part of Art to Remember which is a fundraiser for the Cambridge Elementary School.

Concepts

-Line

-Shape

-Pattern

-Value

-Color

Essential Understanding!

Using line and pattern, they will transfer those concepts to the landscape that they have created. They will have to also think about space, and color when creating their landscape. They will also need to pay attention to the composition of the piece to make sure that they have used the space and technique of line and pattern in their piece.

Motivation Questions

Can someone give me an example of a landscape? Maybe a place where you went hiking with a friend or family?

Who likes to play outside? Maybe ride your bike or roller skate? If you have ever been to the beach remember the sand between your toes, or the mountains where you can smell the fresh pine trees?

Inquiry questions

-What are some different line work that we might be able to do?

-What are some ways that we can use pattern that will add to our landscape?

-Are you using cool colors, like blues, greens, purples? Or are you using warm colors, like oranges, yellows, and reds.

Student Reflection Activity

On the last day giving student the choice to pair share with their table partners and share about their work. And what pattern, and line work that they created. And one thing that is their favorite about the piece.

Teacher Reflection

Overall, I think this lesson went well! I wish I would have found some more ways to have my students have more of a connection to the project. And I wish I would have spent some more time on different lines and patterns! The students seemed to like the project, but I think I would have changed some of the project and added different materials like paint or water color.
