3D Artistic Abilities

Class 4

Project Description

For our fourth lesson we continued to build on the skills from previous lessons including forming, shaping and paper mache techniques through the creation of ornamental masks. These masks were a chance to reveal aspects of students personality through art making, whether that be through form or color. These masks will have string attached and ready to be worn in our next class.

Essential Understandings

The essential understandings for this project are for students to implement the problem solving skills they  have acquired through forming, shaping and using paper mache to now form and shape using plaster gauze which are easier to use. This facilitates the creating of more complex ornamentation.

Intended Outcomes

-Students will continue to develop their ideas through sketching

-Students will continue to work on their 3D building skills through this projects

-Students will develop their design ideas through these masks

-Students will expand on their creativity through this project

-Students will learn to build off a an already 3D item to make it their own

Skills

  • Learning how to use plaster gauze

  • How to shape and form with different materials to add elements to the mask form

  • Techniques of painting on new material of plaster gauze

  • Designing 3D forms through sketching nad practice with materials

  • Problem Solving

Journal Entry

What worked well for this art experience? Why?

I think what worked well about this class is, we as teachers really prepared well for this class. I was very proud. And this was because our plan was just make the paper mache mask, and then if we had any time we would finish painting the paper Mache balloon. We were hoping the masks would take the longer, but we uses plaster strips instead of news print. And that was a lot quicker and the students flew through that. So, after they finished we let them finish their balloon. I think it went really well because we were able to jump right into the next thing, and it flowed really well. We also broke the process of the plaster strips down, and show the students step by step, and I think that went really well. And the students did not need any more help after that or had any questions of what to do. They, just jumped right in and went to work. It was awesome.

What didn’t work well for this art experience? Why?

Some things that could be improved upon, I think we need work on sketches more, and I think that might improve if we as teachers showed our sketches. Most students are sketching, but they are not taking long enough on the sketches. And I think it is really important about the brain storming process, and I think our students should take a bit longer on that. Other than that, I think everything else went pretty well, we defiantly had students who really struggle with focusing and need more one on one attention. And last night, those students were extremely focused and were doing everything on their own with no help.

What would you do differently?  Why?

Things I would do different, I would have a another aspect of making the mask. Like make them a animal or it has to have wacky hair. Just so they would have worked longer on it, and make bigger elements. Also, we should have had different pictures, which was probably our fault because we let one of the teachers just pick them and did not look over them before we taught. Some of them were from different cultures and I was worried that one of the students would want to make one just like the picture, and it would not have be very culturally appropriate. So, next time, we need to look more thoroughly of the examples of pictures, and make sure that all the teachers agree with it.
